How to Prepare for Your First Reformer Pilates Class
3 min read
First reformer class coming up? Good — a little preparation goes a long way toward making it feel less intimidating and a lot more effective. Here's what actually matters.
What to Wear
Fitted, stretchy clothing — nothing too loose, since instructors need to see your alignment to coach you properly. Grip socks are a must (the reformer's carriage and footbar are designed for them, not bare feet or regular socks) — bring a pair or grab some at the front desk.
Come a Few Minutes Early
If it's your first time on a reformer, arrive 10 minutes ahead of class. The machine looks more complicated than it is, but getting comfortable with the springs, straps, and carriage before class starts means you're not learning the equipment and the choreography at the same time.
Start With Reformer 101
We run three formats — 101, XFLOW, and X — and 101 is built specifically for first-timers and anyone building foundational strength and control. It's not "easy," but it's the right entry point before moving into the higher-tempo or higher-intensity formats.
Talk to Your Instructor
Have an old injury, a tight shoulder, lower back issues, anything? Tell your instructor before class. Reformer Pilates is genuinely useful for injury prevention and rehab, but only if the class is adjusted to your body — our coaches build that in when they know what to work around.
Expect to Feel It Differently
This isn't the soreness you get from lifting. Reformer work hits stabilizing muscles most people never train directly — expect your core, hips, and the small muscles around your joints to feel it in a way that's new. That's a good sign, not a bad one.
After Class
Give your body the recovery it deserves. If you have wellness access, ten minutes in the ice bath or hot plunge after your first class is a great way to keep soreness manageable so you're not dreading class two.
Come with an open mind, wear grip socks, and start with 101. The rest takes care of itself.
